The next time you go to a movie or fill your tank up with gas, you may notice something new on the big screen or on the little one above the gas pump. The United States Department of Transportation has released a serious of public service announcements which will air onscreen at Regal Cinema movie theaters and on gas station screens operated by Outcast PumpTop TV.

The safety campaign is titled "OMG," a reference to popular text message shorthand, and also includes the terms "L8R" (later) and "LOL" (laugh out loud). The texting slang will be used in the movie theater PSAs, which are specifically targeted at by distracted driving in teenagers. The ads will air on more than 6,500 Regal Cinema movie screens in Texas and throughout the country.

A more serious version of the ad, aimed at all drivers, will air on screens on top of 12,000 gas pumps across the U.S. All of the ads will also be available for viewing on the newly redesigned Transportation department website on distracted driving, distraction.gov.

The goal of the "OMG" campaign, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said in a press release, is to reduce the occurrence of distracted driving-related car accidents in the young drivers who are the most susceptible to them. "Teen drivers are particularly vulnerable to distracted driving, which is why we're making an extra effort to ensure they understand the dangers," he said. "We're reaching teens directly - whether they're at the movies or filling up their tanks - to emphasize the importance of keeping their eyes on the road, their hands on the wheel, and their focus on driving at all times."
