A driver responsible for a car crash in Donna, Texas could face a felony charge for failing to stop and offer aid after the fact. Following the fatal accident, during which two Mormon missionaries were seriously killed and another was seriously injuried, the driver allegedly left the incident along with his two passengers. He eventually turned himself in at a police station in Progresso, Texas later that night.
According to police reports, the accident occurred while the three missionaries were riding their bicycles on a street not far from a major highway. The vehicle driven by the hit-and-run driver was traveling the opposite direction and hit the bicyclists head-on.
One of the missionaries, age 21, involved in the accident died at the scene of the crime, and a second, age 20, died after being taken to a hospital. The third missionary, age 19, was also taken to the hospital to be treated for serious injuries. He was initially declared to be in critical condition, but was later released.
Local law enforcement is still investigating the cause of the collision and the surrounding circumstances. Police confirmed they would be questioning the passengers that were inside the car at the time of the crash as well as the driver to learn more about the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
The driver, who fled the scene after crashing into the bicyclists, will likely face criminal charges for failure to stop and render aid after an accident. He may be charged with a felony-level offense because the crash resulted in fatalities.
