According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's recent report on U.S. traffic fatalities, 2010 marked a decline in car accident deaths. However, there was an increase in pedestrian accident fatalities in 2010, and many are working to find the reason for the rise.
But despite the national increase, the number of pedestrian accident deaths has decreased in the state of Texas in recent years. In 2008, there were 436, and in both 2009 and 2010 there were 358. Despite the decline, any traffic fatality is one too many, law enforcement officials say, so both drivers and walkers should take extra safety precautions in order to avoid a life-changing motor vehicle accident.
First, pedestrians should be aware of the decrease in depth perception and response time that can result from consuming alcohol or other substances. Even when you are doing the responsible thing and walking home from the bar instead of driving, take extra care when crossing busy streets. Cars that are driving in the late night hours usually don't expect someone to be crossing the street in front of them. By the time they see you, it could be too late.
Second, make yourself visible to drivers, especially if you are out walking after dark. Wear light-colored or reflective clothing, and always cross at a cross walk. Make sure cars see you before you walk in front of them, and don't expect them to stop automatically.
Third, be aware of speed limits, accidents and other traffic conditions in the area to avoid an unexpected situation.
